About

My name is João Santos, I have a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering in the area of Telecommunications, specifically in image and video compression, from the University of Coimbra.

I am currently looking for new career opportunities in Video Compression, either remote or in the Rennes, France, areas. My current research aims to develop efficient compression techniques for upcoming 2D video standard codecs. My research interests also include 2D/3D image and video processing and compression techniques, including ultra-high definition and medical images. Previously, I was a researcher at Instituto de Telecomunicações, from 2011 to 2022, where I have taken part of four research projects, and authored five journal papers and nine refereed conference papers.

In my spare time, I have been an active IEEE student member and have taken part in the foundation of IEEE IPleiria Student Branch where I have been chair and treasurer, in 2013/2014 and 2014/2015, respectively. I have been a Scout since 1996 and, in 2013, I have become a Scout Leader working with children from 6 to 14 years old, additionally I have been Head of Regional Department of Quinta do Escuteiro, a Scout Centre from 2014 to 2017, when I have ceased my activities as a Scout. My years as a Scout at Corpo Nacional de Escutas allowed me to work with several teams an projects, both at local, regional and international levels, and have provided me with opportunities to improve my soft-skills such as teamwork, leadership, responsibility, amongst others.

Work Experience

Video Codec Standard Research Expert - TCL Research Europe (December 2023 - March 2024)

Research of new efficient encoding tools for video compression in ECM.

Post-Doc Researcher on Advanced Video Compression - InterDigital (May 2022 - November 2023)

  • Research of new efficient encoding tools for video compression.
  • Collaborated in writing 8+ patents.
  • Mapping patent portfolio to relevant video encoder softwares
  • Tracking AOM work in AVM (AV2) software

Researcher - Instituto de Telecomunicações (2011 - 2022)

During my time at Instituto de telecomunicações, I have studied state-of-the-art encoders and techniques for different applications, namely, in processing and compression of 3D video-plus-depth, Ultra High Definition images and medical images, using both lossy and lossless techniques, as part of IT research projects. I have developed and implemented new methods for image and video processing and compression, resulting in my BSc final project, entitled "Depth map processing for compression of 3D video", and my MSc dissertation, entitled "Improving Minimum Rate Predictors Algorithm for Compression of Volumetric Medical Images". The latter allowed me to develop a solid knowledge in lossless coding that will be essential to my PhD proposal studies. Additionally, I have also co-authored during this time five papers, three international and one national conference papers and one journal paper, in relevant publications. I have also participated in two COST (3D-ConToutNet) training schools in 3D video and audio processing and compression techniques, in Budapest (2014) and Lisbon (2015), which allowed me to network with international top rate researchers.
